Hydraulic Pump Control

A customer needed a large multiple pump hydraulic system that was capable of running two separate production floors. Running on the power unit from each floor were hydraulic conveyors, hydraulic dumpers, and other associated hydraulic equipment. Throughout the day, the hydraulic power demand varied depending on the equipment running. The customer hoped to save on energy by only running the necessary hydraulic pumps rather than running the full system flow non-stop. Controlled Motion Dynamics was contacted to design an energy saving solution.

Electric Walking Beam

Electric Walking Beam - Walking beams are used in food plant staging coolers mainly for pork and beef facilities. Traditional walking beams have been driven by Hydraulics. CMD provided the system with a fully automatic cooler walking beam system. The operator can select which rails to load and the system will take control after that.

Filter Head Sorter

CMD was asked to modify a filter head sorting machine that never did work correctly. The machine needed to take a batch load of filter heads and flip them to the correct orientation and also verify they all had threads on them. There were several different sizes of filter heads that needed to be accommodated. CMD teamed up with Tri-V Tool and Die for support with the mechanical issues and CMD handled all the controls issues. CMD was also able to greatly simplify the customer's setup time by replacing DVT cameras with Balluff sensors. Please watch the video for complete details on this CMD project.

Sheet Picker

Sheet Picker - Customers were previously moving panels with an overhead crane with a vacuum system and discovered moving these panels one at a time was a chokepoint in their manufacturing process. CMDI came to the solution of developing a machine that would allow operators to carry multiple panels and then drop single panels to distribute them one at a time as needed.

Small Actuator

A customer needed a mini-actuator which would move a small light filter into its place in front of a projector. The actuator had to meet the very specific requirements of having a 12-inch stroke, a traverse speed of 3/4 ips, and an ability of interfacing through a RS232 connection to the existing controller. The customer also wanted this actuator to be inserted into its currently running system without making system changes.

Bin Shuffler Tower

A manufacturing customer who specializes in specific parts assembly was experiencing quality control issues. In particular, managing the parts available to the assembly had become a problem for this manufacturer. To solve quality concerns the customer designed a parts management system using 80/20 products. The system operated as such: • Four bin selection towers each held eight bins • Only the parts bins needed for the part being assembled were available • Each tower had three air cylinders, a cable pulley system, and a Tol-O-Matic brake to raise or lower the needed bins into position • Once in position the assembly technician could pull the needed parts from the parts’ bin storage The customer had already completed basic assembly on the bin towers but needed completion of final assembly in addition to a software package to control the towers.
